Petey Piranha, known in Japan as Boss Pakkun (ボスパクパク, "Boss Piranha"), is a giant, bipedal Piranha Plant boss creature and the unofficial king of the Piranha Plant species. Introduced in 2002’s Super Mario Sunshine, Petey is one of the most physically distinctive bosses in the Mario series: an enormous, bulbous, polka-dot-patterned Piranha Plant body crowned with leafy hair, sporting stubby arms and oversized feet, and a giant maw lined with white teeth. He stands roughly four times the height of Mario, making him one of the largest mainline characters in the franchise.

Petey’s defining characteristic is his combination of imposing size and surprisingly clumsy movement — he is feared for his power but easily exploited by quick-footed opponents. His attacks include slamming the ground with his huge feet, vomiting goop or paint, twirling like a tornado, and (in some games) launching projectile leaves. His chief vulnerability is his belly, which can be ground-pounded or vacuumed to defeat him. Petey debuted in Super Mario Sunshine for the Nintendo GameCube as the boss of Bianco Hills (the game’s first major area) and Ricco Harbor (the second). Bianco Hills features a memorable two-phase boss fight: in the first phase, Petey is fought atop a windmill platform, while in the second phase he sleeps inside the windmill itself with his belly exposed. The Ricco Harbor fight has Petey serving as a polluted-water-spitting boss. The character was designed by Yoshiaki Koizumi’s team specifically as a paint-themed boss to fit the game’s "cleaning" mechanics.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (2003)

Petey returned in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! for the GameCube (2003) as a playable racer, co-piloting a kart with King Boo as a heavyweight team.
