General profile

Cackletta, known in Japan as Gessuu (ゲッスー), is the principal antagonist of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga for the Game Boy Advance (2003) and one of the most theatrically villainous characters in the entire Mario & Luigi RPG series. A tall, gaunt, witch-like Beanish creature with elongated limbs, a hooked nose, dramatically-curled green-blue hair, and a flowing purple-and-gold robe, Cackletta cuts a deliberately operatic villain silhouette. Her introduction in Superstar Saga establishes her as a cunning, theatrical, vengeance-driven antagonist whose elaborate scheme to steal Princess Peach’s voice and use it to access the Beanstar wish-granting artifact drives the entire game’s plot.

Cackletta’s defining role is as the central villain of Superstar Saga and the architect of one of the most narratively-clever villain plots in the Mario & Luigi series. Her scheme involves stealing Princess Peach’s voice during a diplomatic visit to the Beanbean Kingdom, then using it to recite the Beanstar’s wish-activation phrase — which only Peach’s voice can unlock. The complexity and patience of her plot — requiring her to use an ambassadorial visit as cover, recruit a loyal underling (Fawful), and orchestrate elaborate phases of villainy — makes her one of the most strategically interesting Mario series antagonists.

After her defeat in Superstar Saga’s main plot, Cackletta possesses Bowser’s body to become "Bowletta" — a chimeric villain combining her witch-like personality with Bowser’s physical bulk and Koopa-King abilities. The Bowletta fusion is one of the most distinctive plot mechanics in Mario series RPG history, with the merged character serving as the actual final boss of Superstar Saga. After the Bowletta defeat, Cackletta’s soul fragment becomes the game’s superboss — a final challenge for players who complete the main game.

Quotes

"Mwah-hah-hah-hah-hah! The Beanstar is mine!" — Cackletta, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
"Princess! Your voice is mine to claim!" — Cackletta, voice-stealing scene, Superstar Saga
"Fawful! Bring me the brothers!" — Cackletta to her underling, Superstar Saga
"You think you can defeat me? I am the Beanish Witch!" — Cackletta, boss confrontation, Superstar Saga
"My soul shall never rest until the brothers are crushed!" — Cackletta’s Soul, superboss fight, Superstar Saga

Enemies

Cackletta’s primary enemies are Mario and Luigi, against whom she has fought across Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (2003) and its 3DS remake (2017). Her vendetta is specifically directed at Princess Peach, whose voice she steals at the beginning of the game. She also opposes Princess Peach herself, Toadsworth (the Mushroom Kingdom’s ambassador to the Beanbean Kingdom), Prince Peasley (the Beanbean Prince), Queen Bean (Beanbean Kingdom’s ruler), Lady Lima (Queen Bean’s advisor), and the wider Beanbean Kingdom heroic cast. Bowser is technically her enemy as the original Koopa King, though their relationship becomes a forced fusion (Bowletta) rather than direct conflict.

Friends

Cackletta’s only loyal ally is Fawful, her bespectacled underling whom she has personally trained as her successor and second-in-command. Their relationship has the dynamic of mistress-and-apprentice: Fawful is utterly devoted to Cackletta’s vision and treats her commands as inviolable. Cackletta’s broader minion force includes the various Beanish creatures of the Beanbean Kingdom — some of whom are her sworn followers, others are reluctant conscripts. After her death, Fawful continues to act in her memory — his subsequent villainous schemes in Bowser’s Inside Story (2009) are partially motivated by avenging her defeat.

Appearances

Cackletta in Mushroom Kingdom Peach's CastleCackletta debuted in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga for the Game Boy Advance (November 2003, Japan; November 2003, North America), developed by AlphaDream. She is introduced in the game’s opening cinematic during the Mushroom Kingdom’s diplomatic visit to the Beanbean Kingdom. Cackletta and Fawful pose as "Goodwill Ambassadors" before revealing their true intentions and stealing Princess Peach’s voice. The character was designed by AlphaDream’s character team led by Akira Otani.

Bowletta Fusion (2003)

Bowletta Cackletta possessing BowserAfter Cackletta’s initial defeat in Superstar Saga, her spirit possesses Bowser’s body to create "Bowletta" — the fused chimeric form that serves as the game’s actual final boss. The Bowletta plot mechanic is one of the most distinctive in Mario series RPG history: the villain’s consciousness inhabits a stolen body, creating a hybrid character with Cackletta’s witch-like personality and Bowser’s physical Koopa-King abilities. The Bowletta boss fight has multiple phases and is one of the most challenging encounters in the 2003 game.

Cackletta’s Soul Superboss (2003)

Cackletta's Soul superboss in Superstar SagaAfter the Bowletta phase is defeated, Cackletta’s residual soul-fragment forms one final boss — the "Cackletta’s Soul" superboss. This phase features a much darker, more sinister version of Cackletta’s witch design, with a glowing red colour scheme and significantly more aggressive attack patterns. The Soul phase is the true final boss of the game’s endgame and one of the most challenging final encounters of the GBA RPG era.

Possession of Bowser (2003)

Cackletta possessing BowserThe scene in which Cackletta possesses Bowser’s body is one of the most cinematically dramatic cutscenes of the 2003 game. After Bowser is defeated by Cackletta’s magic, her spirit physically enters his body, transforming him into the Bowletta hybrid. The scene’s body-horror tone is unusual for the typically-comedic Mario series and has been frequently cited as one of the most-memorable cutscenes in the Mario & Luigi RPG sub-series.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions (3DS, 2017)

Cackletta in 3DS remakeCackletta returns in the Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions Nintendo 3DS remake (October 2017). The remake faithfully recreates the 2003 game with updated 3D graphics, expanded animation, and refined combat mechanics. The remake also adds the "Bowser’s Minions" side-campaign in which Cackletta makes additional cameo appearances. Her boss fights have been visually enhanced with the modern 3D rendering capabilities.

Cameos and References

Cackletta has been referenced in Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story (2009) — in which Fawful’s schemes are partially motivated by avenging her defeat — and in Paper Mario: The Origami King (Switch, 2020) as an Easter egg in supplementary materials. She is referenced in Mario & Luigi: Brothership (Switch, 2024) as part of the Mario & Luigi series legacy commemoration. She has not made any post-Superstar Saga playable appearance in any Mario series spin-off or Smash Bros. entry.

Trivia & Official Sources

  • Cackletta was designed by AlphaDream’s character team led by Akira Otani for Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (2003). The character’s witch-like aesthetic was a deliberate creative departure from typical Mario series villain templates.
  • The Japanese name Gessuu (ゲッスー) is a stylised contraction of Japanese onomatopoeia for cackling laughter. The Western name "Cackletta" preserves the laughter-association and adds a feminine -etta suffix.
  • Atsuko Tanaka voiced Cackletta in Japanese for the 2003 game. Tanaka is best known internationally as the voice of Motoko Kusanagi in the Ghost in the Shell franchise — her Cackletta performance is one of her most-recognised video game voice roles.
  • The Pix’n Love Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. (2018) describes Cackletta as "the Beanish witch antagonist of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, principal villain whose voice-stealing scheme drives the entire game."
  • The "Bowletta" fusion — in which Cackletta’s spirit possesses Bowser’s body — is one of the most distinctive plot mechanics in Mario series RPG history. The fusion character has separate stats from either Cackletta or Bowser alone, with hybrid abilities that combine elements of both characters.
  • Cackletta’s relationship with Fawful — her loyal underling — is the most narratively-significant villain partnership in the Mario & Luigi RPG series. Fawful’s continued devotion to her after her death drives the plot of Bowser’s Inside Story (2009).
  • Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (2003) sold approximately 2 million copies on the GBA, making it one of the highest-selling Mario RPGs of its era. The game’s critical acclaim was a major factor in establishing the Mario & Luigi RPG sub-series.
  • The Beanstar — the wish-granting artifact Cackletta seeks to activate — is a unique Superstar Saga plot device that has not been referenced in subsequent Mario & Luigi entries. The artifact is exclusive to the 2003 game’s lore.
  • Cackletta’s Soul superboss fight has different combat patterns from any other boss in Superstar Saga, including unique attacks like the "Fawful Apparition" (a ghost-image of Fawful that attacks the brothers). The Soul phase is widely considered one of the most challenging final-boss encounters of the GBA era.
  • The character has not appeared in any Smash Bros. entry as either a fighter, assist trophy, or Mii Fighter costume as of late 2025. Unlike Geno, who received a long-awaited Mii Fighter costume in 2021, Cackletta has not been the subject of a major Smash community-request campaign.
  • Cackletta’s Beanish species classification — the same species as her underling Fawful and the wider Beanbean Kingdom population — is one of the most distinctive ethnographic groupings in Mario series lore. The Beanish species has not appeared outside of the Mario & Luigi series.
  • The 2017 3DS remake of Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions preserved Cackletta’s original 2003 voice direction and translated dialogue, with the remake’s enhanced 3D rendering giving her boss fights significantly more visual fidelity.
  • AlphaDream, the studio behind Cackletta’s creation, ceased operations in October 2019. The Mario & Luigi RPG series was subsequently revived by Acquire in 2024 with Brothership, which references Cackletta’s legacy in supplementary materials.
  • Cackletta’s voice-stealing scheme — in which she steals Princess Peach’s voice to access the Beanstar’s wish-activation phrase — is widely considered one of the most narratively-clever villain plots in the Mario series. The plot mechanic has not been reused in subsequent Mario entries.
  • Cackletta has not been confirmed to appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (April 2026) as of late 2025 pre-release marketing. The character’s film-adaptation status remains one of the open questions for Illumination’s Super Mario film series.
  • The Bowletta fusion form’s defeat scene at the end of Superstar Saga — in which Cackletta’s spirit is expelled from Bowser’s body — is one of the most dramatic villain-defeat cinematics in the Mario & Luigi RPG series. The 2017 3DS remake enhanced the scene with modernised animation.
