General profile
Fawful, known in Japan as Gesshu (ゲッシュ), is one of the most beloved and quotable villains in the entire Mario series. A diminutive Beanish creature with thick round spectacles, distinctively bulbous nose, a sharp-toothed grin, a perpetually-floating jetpack-style hover-platform he calls his "Headgear," and a wardrobe of purple-and-red mad-scientist robes, Fawful debuted as Cackletta’s loyal underling in 2003’s Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga for the Game Boy Advance. He returned to take centre stage as the main villain of Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story (DS, 2009), where his elaborate scheme to absorb the Dark Star’s power and become a god-king of the Mushroom Kingdom drove the entire game’s plot.
Fawful’s defining characteristic is his utterly distinctive speech pattern — a tortured, English-language-warping syntax that has become one of the most-quoted vocal styles in Mario series history. Lines like "I have FURY!", "The fink-rat has FURY!", "I have CHORTLES!", "You have time for nothing!" and "Your courage is delicious to me!" have been turned into countless internet memes and have made Fawful one of the most-merchandised non-Bowser Mario series villains. The English translation was notably handled by Tom Connery and Nintendo of America’s Treehouse team, who deliberately preserved the Japanese script’s linguistically-broken style by inventing entirely new English-language quirks for Fawful’s dialogue.
Fawful’s villainous motivation is complex and theatrical. In Superstar Saga he serves Cackletta’s vendetta against the Mushroom Kingdom’s Princess Peach, helping her steal Peach’s voice and combat the Mario Brothers. After Cackletta’s defeat he disappears for nearly six years. In Bowser’s Inside Story he returns as a much more elaborate antagonist with his own grand scheme: he has been quietly running a snack-cart business inside Bowser’s kingdom while plotting to absorb the Dark Star’s power, take over Princess Peach’s Castle, and rule the Mushroom Kingdom as god-king. The game’s elaborate "inside Bowser’s body" gameplay mechanic was a direct response to Fawful’s scheme to use Bowser as a vehicle for his villainy.
Quotes
Enemies
Fawful’s primary enemies are Mario and Luigi, against whom he has fought across Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (2003), Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story (2009), and their respective 3DS remakes (2017 and 2018). In Bowser’s Inside Story Bowser is also a major target of his scheme — Fawful uses Bowser’s body as a vehicle for his Mushroom Kingdom takeover plot, making Bowser an unwilling ally-of-circumstance with the Mario Brothers against Fawful. He also opposes Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Toadsworth, the Star Sprites, and the wider Mushroom Kingdom heroic and royal cast.
Friends
Fawful’s only true ally is Cackletta, his mentor and the primary antagonist of Superstar Saga. Their relationship has the dynamic of an underling-to-mistress: Fawful is utterly devoted to Cackletta’s villainous vision and treats her commands as inviolable. After Cackletta’s defeat in Superstar Saga, Fawful continues to work in her memory — his Bowser’s Inside Story scheme is partially motivated by avenging her defeat. In Bowser’s Inside Story his right-hand minion is Midbus, a giant pig-like creature who serves as Fawful’s muscle. The Beanish minions of the Beanbean Kingdom were originally Cackletta’s subjects and have varying loyalties to Fawful’s subsequent schemes.
Appearances
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA, 2003)
Fawful debuted in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga for the Game Boy Advance (November 2003, Japan; November 2003, North America), developed by AlphaDream. He serves as Cackletta’s loyal underling throughout the game, accompanying her on her vendetta against Princess Peach. After Cackletta’s death, Fawful temporarily possesses her body for a final boss confrontation with the Mario Brothers — a scene that became one of the most-memorable boss fights of the GBA era. Fawful was designed by AlphaDream’s character team led by Akira Otani.
Fawful’s catchphrase and speech pattern (2003)
Fawful’s distinctive speech pattern — the English-language-warping "I have FURY!" and similar phrases — was deliberately invented by Nintendo of America’s localisation team to preserve the Japanese script’s linguistically-broken comedic style. The team, led by translator Tom Connery, treated Fawful’s dialogue as a creative-writing exercise rather than a straight translation. The character’s speech has since become one of the most-quoted vocal patterns in Mario series history.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story (DS, 2009)
Fawful’s most substantial role came in Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story for the Nintendo DS (September 2009, Japan; September 2009, North America). He serves as the principal antagonist of the game, with his elaborate Dark Star absorption scheme driving the entire plot. The opening sequence — in which Fawful tricks Bowser into inhaling Mushroom Kingdom citizens with his "Vacuum Shroom" gift, leading to the "inside Bowser’s body" gameplay mechanic — is one of the most-praised opening cinematics in Mario series RPG history.
Dark Star Absorption (2009)
Fawful’s grand scheme in Bowser’s Inside Story reaches its climax when he absorbs the power of the Dark Star — an enormous magical artifact that grants him god-like powers and the ability to transform into the "Dark Star Core" super-boss form. The boss fight against the empowered Dark Star Core Fawful is one of the most challenging and lengthy boss encounters in the Mario & Luigi RPG series. The Dark Star Core has multiple phases, dramatic visual transformations, and a soundtrack that incorporates elements of his Superstar Saga themes.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions (3DS, 2017)
Fawful returns in the Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions Nintendo 3DS remake (October 2017). The remake faithfully recreates Fawful’s 2003 role with updated 3D graphics and animation. The remake also adds the new "Bowser’s Minions" side-campaign — in which Captain Goomba leads an army of Bowser’s minions to rescue him — in which Fawful makes additional cameo appearances. The 3DS remake represented the first major presentation of Fawful for the 2010s generation of Mario fans.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey (3DS, 2018)
Fawful returns in the Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey Nintendo 3DS remake (December 2018, Japan; January 2019, North America). The remake adds the "Bowser Jr.’s Journey" side-campaign — in which Bowser Jr. leads a Koopa Troop campaign during the events of the main game — in which Fawful is featured prominently. The 3DS remake represented Fawful’s most-presented appearance to date and reintroduced him to a new generation of fans.
Other Appearances and References
Fawful has made cameo appearances in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (3DS, 2013), Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (3DS, 2015), and is referenced in Mario & Luigi: Brothership (Switch, 2024). He has not appeared as a playable character in any Smash Bros. entry, but is one of the most-requested non-Smash Mario series villain characters in fan-survey rankings.
Trivia & Official Sources
- Fawful was designed by AlphaDream’s character team led by Akira Otani for Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (2003). The character’s distinctive bespectacled appearance and Headgear hover-platform were a deliberate creative choice to differentiate him from the standard Mario series villain templates.
- The Japanese name Gesshu (ゲッシュ) is a stylised contraction of "giggle" or "chortle" sounds — a deliberate reference to the character’s cackling laughter habits. The Western name "Fawful" was created for the 2003 localisation by Nintendo of America’s Treehouse team.
- Fawful’s catchphrase "I have FURY!" was created by translator Tom Connery during the 2003 Superstar Saga localisation. The phrase has become one of the most-quoted Mario series villain catchphrases in fan culture, alongside Bowser’s "Bwa ha ha!" and Wario’s "Wah!"
- The English-language-warping syntax of Fawful’s dialogue was deliberately invented by Nintendo of America’s localisation team rather than being a direct translation of the Japanese original. The Japanese script does use slightly off-kilter speech patterns, but the English version dramatically amplified the effect for comedic distinctiveness.
- The Pix’n Love Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. (2018) describes Fawful as "the bespectacled Beanish villain of the Mario & Luigi RPG series, principal antagonist of Bowser’s Inside Story."
- Hironobu Kageyama has voiced Fawful in Japanese since 2003. Kageyama is also known as the singer of the Dragon Ball Z theme song "Cha-La Head-Cha-La" — his Mario series voice work has been a side-career for the established musician.
- Fawful’s "Headgear" — the flying jetpack-style hover-platform he rides throughout his appearances — is an in-universe invention that he constructed himself. The Headgear has been preserved across all of his appearances since 2003 as his signature transportation method.
- Fawful’s six-year disappearance between Superstar Saga (2003) and Bowser’s Inside Story (2009) is canonically explained in the latter game: he had been quietly running a snack-cart business in the Mushroom Kingdom while plotting his return. The mundane "snack-cart Fawful" was one of the most-celebrated character moments in the 2009 game.
- The Dark Star — the magical artifact Fawful absorbs in Bowser’s Inside Story — was created by AlphaDream specifically for the 2009 game. The Dark Star Core super-boss form is widely considered one of the most challenging and lengthy boss encounters in the entire Mario & Luigi RPG series.
- Fawful merchandise has been continuously available through Nintendo Japan’s official channels since 2003 including plush toys, keychains, and t-shirts. Fawful is one of the most-merchandised non-Bowser Mario series villain characters.
- Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story (2009) sold approximately 4.5 million copies worldwide. The game is widely regarded as the high-water mark of the Mario & Luigi RPG series, with Fawful’s villainy being a major contributor to its critical acclaim.
- Fawful has not appeared as a playable character or Mii Fighter costume in any Super Smash Bros. entry as of late 2025. He is one of the most-requested Mario series villain characters in Smash community fan polls, particularly for inclusion as a future Mii Mage costume.
- Fawful’s relationship with Cackletta — his mentor and the principal villain of Superstar Saga — has been canonically established as one of devoted-underling-to-mistress. Fawful continues to act in Cackletta’s memory after her defeat, making her one of the most narratively significant characters in his backstory.
- The 2017 3DS remake of Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions and the 2018 3DS remake of Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey both retained Fawful’s original 2003 / 2009 voice direction and translated dialogue, preserving his catchphrases and speech patterns unchanged.
- AlphaDream, the studio behind Fawful’s creation, ceased operations in October 2019 — ending the Mario & Luigi RPG series development that had introduced Fawful. The series was subsequently revived in 2024 with Mario & Luigi: Brothership, developed by Acquire, which references Fawful’s legacy in supplementary materials.
- Fawful has not been confirmed to appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (April 2026) as of late 2025 pre-release marketing. The character’s film-adaptation status remains one of the open questions for Illumination’s Super Mario film series.
